The P3O® (Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices) method is a framework and set of recommendations for project management offices (PMOs) and organisational governance. It is primarily designed for the management of portfolios, programmes and projects within an organisation. P3O® is often used in conjunction with other project management methodologies and frameworks, such as PRINCE2® (Projects in Controlled Environments) and MSP® (Managing Successful Programmes).
The programme is aimed primarily at professionals wishing to acquire a general understanding of the P3O® model and its guidelines. Course objectives include understanding the P3O method, its models, tools and techniques, as well as its practical application. The course will include a theoretical component as well as practical exercises in the form of MCQs and case studies.
At the end of this three-day course, you will also be prepared to obtain P3O® Foundation certification through a mock exam (for more information, see the certification tab). This certification is a prerequisite for access to higher levels of certification, such as P3O Practitioner.

Day 1: Introduction to the P3O® method

  • Definition of P3O®: Understand what a P3O® is and its context of use.
    Differences between project, programme and portfolio management: Identify the distinct characteristics of each domain.
  • Lifecycles: Exploring the lifecycles of projects, programmes and portfolios.
    P3O® models: Understand what a model is and discover the different P3O® models available.

Day 2: P3O® Roles, Tools and Techniques

  • Roles in P3O®: Understanding the skills required for P3O® management and the roles of the members involved.
  • Setting up a P3O® team: Learn how to build and energise an effective team.
  • P3O® tools and techniques: Identifying the tools available, their use cases and the strategic advantages associated with their implementation.
  • Adapting tools: Understand how to adjust tools to suit the specific context.

Day 3: Implementation and Exam Preparation

  • Vision and stakeholders: Define the P3O® vision and identify key stakeholders.
  • Action plan: Draw up an action plan including processes, organisation of decisions, tools and information flows.
  • Risk management: Learn how to manage the risks associated with implementing P3O®.
  • P3O® Foundation exam preparation: Complete an assessment exercise with case studies and sit a mock exam (MCQ) with correction.

This course is aimed at the following audiences:

  • anyone who is a member of a Project Management Office (PMO) and wishes to implement the P3O® method;
  • any other professional wishing to understand the terminology and concepts of the P3O® model.

The P3O® Foundation course requires the following prerequisites:

  • 2 years' experience in project or programme management are recommended;
  • a good written understanding of English.

On completion of the P3O® Foundation course, you will achieve the following objectives:

  • Understand the P3O® model: Familiarise yourself with the concept, terminology and guidelines associated with the P3O® model.
  • Differentiate between types of management: Learn to distinguish between project management, programme management and portfolio management.
  • Identify the roles of the players: Explore the roles and objectives of the different players involved in managing a P3O®.
  • Learn about the tools and techniques: Discover the main activities, tools and techniques used in a P3O®.
  • Stages in the development of governance: Understand all the stages involved in developing a governance structure designed to optimise a company's investment in change, while continuing with its current activities.
  • Selecting a P3O® model: Identify the criteria for choosing a P3O® model based on a company's specific needs.
  • Implementing or restructuring a P3O®: Learn how to implement or restructure a P3O® model and evaluate its effectiveness.
  • P3O® Foundation certification: Prepare to pass the exam and obtain P3O® Foundation certification
